The Wheels cont.

With upgrades your car can jump from it’s stock D class to the A class, where it will face tougher competition or in some cases actually eat the competition alive and then some. This means that the class system actually plays a vital part of your career strategy. Upgrading a car as much as possible isn’t always the best option. For example, swapping the engine of a VW Golf R32 (AWD) into a VW Beetle Turbo S (FWD), modding it to about 550 bhp, might be fun, but unless you enjoy investigating the tire stacks up close, you’ll definitely want to keep tabs on the car’s class. Keeping your car in the class where it performs and competes best is what you’ll want be aiming for.

Forza Motorsport’s marketing strategy evolved around the line “You are what you race”. The appearance category emphasises this and allows you to modify the exterior of your car by buying front/read bumpers, side skirts, spoilers, rims, window tints or a shiny, new pair of rear lenses. Also, an unique feature is the paint manager. You’ll want to set yourself apart from the online competition by painting your own livery on any of the sections supporting 100 layers per section. The paint manager will satisfy the artists among us.

A fair warning is at place: you shouldn’t expect anything similar in terms of customization to the likes of Need For Speed: Underground or Midnight Club 3. Forza Motorsport allows you to customize your car, but most of the customizations are directly related to and affecting your car’s performance.

The Places You’ll Destroy

The tracks and locales you are expected to burn rubber at are an important part of the feature list in a racing simulation. The list might not be huge, but it does include some of the finest on this planet. Mazda Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, Silverstone Circuit, Tsukuba Circuit as well as street circuits in New York and Tokyo. The general, licensed selection of circuits is supported by a set of fictional tracks ranging from complicated test tracks to a dragstrip. This is increased even more by the fact that nearly every circuit comes in a shortened layout.

All of that is great, but it wouldn’t be complete without my personal favourite: the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The 174 turn beast of Germany is back and better than ever. If you are unfamiliar with this amazing track, then perhaps the fact that a single lap in your tricked out street legal car won’t take less than eight minutes, might impress you. Eight minutes, turn after turn, your racing skills are put to the test.

The Gameplay

Forza Motorsport comes with an extensive career mode guaranteed to keep you playing for hours and hours. At the start of the game you are required to make a choice of region between United States, Europe or Asia. This choice will affect the price and availability of cars and parts from regions other than your own. Eventually, you will be able to have every single car of every region in your garage.

The Career Mode is divided into several events. Amateur and Professional are different in terms of restrictions and competition. Championship will send you racing on several tracks trying to score as many points as possible. Point-to-Point is an event where you race from one point to another through Japanese mountains (down hill or hill climb) or the dark streets of a fictional town. Online Events allow you to advance in your single player mode by racing gamers over Xbox Live. Finally, Endurance Races will require you to start thinking about pit stop and tire strategies or a great opportunity to let the Drivatar do the work for you.
